Description

The ‘Wheeny’ Grapefruit is a delightful cultivar of Citrus x paradisi that produces vibrant, juicy fruit ideal for Perth gardens. Originating from Barbados, this evergreen tree performs best in full sun but will tolerate part shade. It thrives in well-draining, sandy or loamy soil enriched with compost; when grown in pots, a premium-quality citrus potting mix is ideal. ‘Wheeny’ is suitable for garden beds and large pots, adding ornamental beauty with its glossy green foliage and spring blooms.

Flowering from Early Spring (Djilba) to Late Summer (Bunuru), ‘Wheeny’ produces fragrant white flowers tinged with purple, which give way to its sought-after grapefruit. Harvest fruit when the skin turns yellow and feels firm but slightly soft. Its grapefruits are fantastic fresh or juiced, delivering a refreshing, slightly tangy flavour. Regular watering through warm weather is essential to produce juicy fruit and avoid splitting. Ensure careful handling, as citrus trees can have thorns that may puncture the skin.
