Description
Asparagus officinalis, commonly known as Garden Asparagus, is a perennial herb native to the Eastern Mediterranean. It’s known for its delicious and nutritious spears, which can be grown successfully in Perth's climate. Garden Asparagus thrives in full sun to part shade and does well in both garden beds and large containers. This plant's fern-like foliage reaches up to 1.5 metres in height, providing an attractive backdrop in the garden while also serving as a beneficial edible addition. Asparagus is relatively low-maintenance but requires patience, as it is best harvested from the second or third growing season onward.
To grow healthy asparagus, plant in well-draining soil with added compost or organic matter. Water moderately, increasing frequency during hot spells but allowing soil to drain thoroughly. In Djilba (Early Spring) and Kambarang (Late Spring), young asparagus shoots will emerge. Harvest spears by cutting them at ground level when they are about 15-20 cm tall, but cease harvesting after 6-8 weeks to allow the plant to regenerate for the next season. With proper care, asparagus can produce for up to 20 years, offering a sustainable source of fresh spears each year.
