Description
Caraway (Curum carvi), also known as Meridian Fennel or Persian Cumin, is an aromatic herb native to the Mediterranean Basin. It is valued for its unique flavour, often described as a blend of anise, fennel, and cumin, with a warm and slightly peppery taste. Caraway plants are grown in full sun to part shade and prefer well-drained, fertile soil, which makes them suitable for Perth’s sunny climate. With slender, feathery leaves, caraway reaches around 30–60 cm in height, making it a great choice for herb gardens, pots, or as a border plant in garden beds. Caraway is generally hardy, tolerates drought conditions once established, and requires moderate watering to thrive.
The seeds of caraway are harvested in Late Summer (Bunuru) to Autumn (Djeran) when the flower heads dry and turn brown. The seeds are commonly used in cooking, imparting a distinctive taste to bread, curries, soups, and pickled vegetables. Additionally, caraway seeds are believed to aid digestion and reduce bloating, making them a popular choice in herbal teas and medicinal recipes. This versatile herb brings a unique culinary and medicinal value to any garden, with the added benefit of its beautiful, small white or pink flowers that bloom in Late Spring (Kambarang).
