Description

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are a culinary delight with slender, green hollow stems and a mild onion flavour. Not only do they add a fresh zing to dishes, but during Makuru (winter) to Djilba (early spring), they sport delicate purple flowers, adding a splash of colour to gardens. As a perennial herb, they return year after year, making them a sustainable choice for the garden.

These versatile plants flourish in pots, vege/herb gardens, and directly in the ground. For those opting for ground planting in sandy soils, it's beneficial to mix in some soil conditioner to bolster growth. Chives thrive in full sun to partial shade with moderate watering. Harvesting is simple: snip the green tops as needed, ideally in the morning when their flavour is most concentrated. To ensure vigorous growth, an application of balanced fertiliser in Djilba (early spring) is ideal.
