Description

Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans' is a dwarf, evergreen shrub known for its prostrate, spreading habit and lustrous, dark green leaves. This miniature gardenia produces petite, double white flowers approximately 2.5 cm in diameter, exuding a strong, sweet fragrance. Blooming profusely from late spring to early summer (Kambarang to Birak), it may also flower intermittently during autumn (Djeran). Reaching a height of 30 to 60 cm and spreading 1 to 1.5 metres, 'Radicans' is ideal for use as a ground cover, in low borders, or in containers, making it a versatile addition to Perth gardens.

In Perth's climate, 'Radicans' thrives in full sun to part shade, with some protection from the harsh afternoon sun during summer. Plant it in well-drained, acidic soil; incorporating an acidic mix or using a gardenia-specific potting mix is beneficial. Regular watering during warmer months is essential to maintain soil moisture, but ensure the soil is not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Feeding with a balanced, acidic fertiliser fortnightly during the growing season will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Prune lightly after the main flowering period to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Protect the plant from frost during cooler months.
