Description
Brillantaisia cicatricosa, commonly known as Giant Salvia, is a striking evergreen plant known for its lush, large foliage and tall, showy flower spikes that resemble traditional salvias. Native to tropical Africa, this cottage garden plant thrives in Perth’s mild climate when given a sheltered spot in part shade. Giant Salvia’s vibrant purple-blue flowers bloom from Early Spring (Djilba) to Early Summer (Birak), adding a touch of the exotic to garden beds and borders. Its towering height and bushy growth make it an ideal backdrop plant or a statement piece in the garden.
This hardy plant grows best in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, requiring regular watering to keep the soil consistently damp, especially during hot, dry spells. Though it can tolerate short periods of drought once established, it will flourish with consistent care. While it is best suited to garden beds, it can also be grown in large pots. An occasional trim after flowering will help maintain its shape and encourage a more compact growth habit, making Giant Salvia a vibrant addition to any lush, tropical-themed garden.
