Description
Ficus lyrata, commonly known as the Fiddle-Leaf Fig, is a striking indoor plant loved for its large, violin-shaped leaves with prominent veining. This evergreen tree adds a dramatic touch to any space with its bold, glossy foliage. When grown indoors, it is usually kept at a manageable height of 1.5 to 2.5 M, but in ideal outdoor conditions, it can reach an impressive height of up to 30 M. This plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can adapt to filtered sunlight.
Plant your Fiddle-Leaf Fig in free-draining soil and water it when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Feed the plant during its growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage. Periodically clean the leaves to remove dust and maintain its vibrant appearance.
Ficus species have strong and invasive roots. Care should be taken when planting outdoors to ensure they are positioned well away from reticulation systems and infrastructure to prevent damage. In pots, monitor for roots growing through drainage holes to avoid unintended rooting into the ground.
