Description
Ceropegia radicans, commonly known as the Desert Vine, is a distinctive succulent native to South Africa's Eastern Cape province. This evergreen plant features trailing stems that can extend between 1–3 metres in length, making it ideal for hanging baskets or as a cascading feature in pots. Its fleshy, ovate leaves are a rich green, providing a lush backdrop to its unique, lantern-like flowers. These flowers have a slender, tubular structure that flares into a cage-like formation at the top, showcasing a blend of green and dark purple hues. While flowering is sporadic, when it does occur, it adds an exotic touch to any indoor setting.
In Perth, Ceropegia radicans thrives indoors in bright, indirect light. It prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil and requires moderate watering; allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. During the warmer months, a monthly application of a balanced liquid fertiliser supports healthy growth. As temperatures cool in Makuru (winter), reduce watering to mimic its natural dormant period. Pruning the trailing stems helps maintain the desired shape and encourages bushier growth.
