Description

Alocasia macrorrhizos, commonly known as Giant Taro or Elephant's Ear, is a striking perennial plant native to Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and northeastern Australia. This species is renowned for its impressive foliage, featuring large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that can reach up to 1 meter in length. The plant typically attains a height and spread of 1 to 1.5 meters, making it a bold statement in garden landscapes or as an indoor specimen. In Perth's climate, Giant Taro thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and benefits from protection against strong winds. It's well-suited for indoor cultivation, adding a tropical touch to interior settings.?

For optimal growth, plant Giant Taro in free-draining soil rich in organic matter. Maintain consistent moisture levels, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, as the plant does not tolerate drought conditions. Regular watering is essential, especially during the warmer months. Applying a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season will support vigorous growth. In Perth, Giant Taro may enter dormancy during Makuru (Winter), with foliage dying back; reduce watering during this period to prevent root rot. As temperatures rise in Djilba (Early Spring), new growth typically emerges. Regularly remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and health.
