Description
AAlyogyne huegelii 'West Coast Gem', commonly known as Native Hibiscus, is an evergreen shrub native to Western Australia. This fast-growing plant typically reaches a height and width of 2 to 2.5 meters, making it suitable for use as a feature plant, informal hedge, or screening shrub. It is renowned for its abundant, large, funnel-shaped, deep purple flowers that bloom profusely from spring through autumn, with the main flush occurring during the warmer months. The finely divided, mid- to bright green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the vibrant blooms.
For optimal growth in Perth's climate, 'West Coast Gem' thrives in full sun to part shade positions and prefers well-drained soils, including sandy or loamy types. Once established, it exhibits good drought tolerance and can withstand light frosts. To maintain a dense and healthy form, it is advisable to prune the shrub after the main flowering period, encouraging new growth and further flowering. Applying a native plant fertiliser during the growing season will support vigorous development.
