Description

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is renowned for its myriad of uses, particularly in organic gardening and herbal medicine. Its lush green foliage and delicate bell-shaped flowers (typically a shade of purple, pink, or white) make it a visually appealing addition, particularly when it blooms during Djilba to Kambarang (late winter to spring). As a dynamic accumulator, Comfrey's deep roots draw up nutrients from the soil, making its leaves a rich source of minerals and an excellent addition to compost or as a mulch in vege/herb gardens.

When planting Comfrey in the ground, enhancing poor, sandy soils with a good quality soil conditioner will ensure optimal growth. This hardy perennial prefers full sun to partial shade and regular watering, but once established, it can tolerate some drought. To harness its benefits, gardeners can chop and drop its leaves around plants, use them to activate compost heaps, or steep them in water to create a nutrient-rich liquid fertiliser.
