Description
Cotyledon orbiculata, commonly known as Pig's Ear or Round-Leafed Navel Wort, is an evergreen succulent native to South Africa. This versatile plant thrives in both garden beds and pots, making it suitable for various settings. Its fleshy, rounded leaves are typically green to grey-green, often edged with a distinctive red margin, and may develop a powdery white coating that helps reflect sunlight and conserve moisture. During the warmer months, particularly from late spring to early autumn (Kambarang to Bunuru), Pig's Ear produces charming, bell-shaped flowers in shades of orange to red, adding a vibrant touch to the garden.
For optimal growth in Perth's climate, plant Pig's Ear in well-draining sandy or loamy soil, enriched with compost to enhance fertility. Position it in full sun to part shade, ensuring it receives ample light. While this succulent is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering during extended dry periods will promote healthier growth and more prolific flowering. Be cautious not to overwater, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot. Applying a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring (Djilba) can support vigorous development. Pruning spent flower stalks and any damaged or dead leaves will help maintain the plant's appearance and overall health.
