Crassula ovata - SHREK - Jade Plant

Crassula ovata 'Hobbit', also known as 'Shrek' Jade, is a compact, evergreen succulent prized for its whimsical, tubular green leaves that curl inward, resembling the ears of its namesake character. The foliage often develops red tips when exposed to bright sunlight, adding a splash of colour to its unique appearance. Native to South Africa, this slow-growing plant typically reaches 60–90 cm in height and width, making it ideal for pots, bonsai, or as a feature in succulent gardens. In Perth, it thrives in full sun to partial shade, with its best growth occurring during the cooler months. 'Hobbit' Jade may produce small, star-shaped white or pale pink flowers in winter (Makuru), providing seasonal interest.

For optimal growth, plant 'Hobbit' Jade in sandy, well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. During the active growing seasons of spring and summer (Djilba to Bunuru), a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser can be applied monthly to support healthy development. This hardy plant is well-suited to Perth's climate and can be grown both indoors and outdoors, making it a versatile addition to any garden or home.
