Description
Ctenanthe burle-marxii, commonly known as the Fishbone Prayer Plant, is a compact, evergreen perennial native to Brazil. It features oblong, pale green leaves adorned with dark green, fishbone-like patterns and striking purple undersides. This plant exhibits nyctinasty, folding its leaves upward at night and unfurling them during the day. In Perth, it thrives indoors in bright, indirect light, making it ideal for pots, hanging baskets, or shaded garden beds. While it may produce small, white flowers intermittently throughout the year, flowering is rare when grown indoors.
For optimal growth, plant in a moist, well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter. Maintain consistent moisture, allowing the top centimetre of soil to dry out between waterings. Use room-temperature, non-calcareous water to prevent leaf spotting. During the active growing seasons of spring and summer (Djilba to Bunuru), apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser monthly. Repot annually in spring (Djilba) to accommodate growth. This plant prefers temperatures above 10°C and high humidity, making it well-suited to Perth's indoor environments.
