Description
Espostoa lanata, commonly known as the Peruvian Old Man Cactus or Snowball Cactus, is a striking feature plant native to Ecuador and Peru. This tall columnar cactus can grow between 3 - 5 M in height, with dense, white, woolly hairs that provide a unique and textural appearance. The woolly coating protects the cactus from intense sun and adds to its visual appeal, making it a focal point in gardens or collections. In mature plants, it can produce creamy-white flowers during the warmer months, although these are typically nocturnal and may be less common in potted specimens.
Ideal for Perth's sunny climate, this cactus thrives in pots, rockeries, and xeriscape gardens. It prefers well-draining, sandy, or rocky soils and needs minimal watering once established, requiring occasional watering during extended dry spells. For best growth, place it in full sun and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Minimal care is needed, making it perfect for beginner and experienced gardeners alike.
