Description

Gardenia jasminoides 'Jupiter' is an evergreen shrub resulting from a cross between 'Buttons' and 'Magnifica' cultivars. It features glossy, dark green leaves and produces highly fragrant, double white flowers from late spring to early summer (Kambarang to Birak), with potential for additional blooming in autumn (Djeran). This compact shrub reaches a height of 1 to 1.5 metres and a width of 70 centimetres to 1 metre, making it suitable for garden beds, borders, or container planting. Its intoxicating fragrance and attractive foliage make it a standout addition to any garden.

In Perth's climate, 'Jupiter' thrives in full sun to part shade, with some protection from the harsh afternoon sun during summer. Plant it in well-drained, acidic soil; incorporating an acidic mix or using a gardenia-specific potting mix is beneficial. Regular watering during warmer months is essential to maintain soil moisture, but ensure the soil is not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Feeding with a balanced, acidic fertiliser fortnightly during the growing season will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Prune lightly after the main flowering period to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Protect the plant from frost during cooler months.
