Description

Gardenia jasminoides 'Ocean Pearl' is an evergreen shrub renowned for its glossy, deep green foliage and highly fragrant, double white flowers. This cultivar blooms prolifically from late spring to early summer (Kambarang to Birak), with potential for additional flowering in autumn (Djeran). Reaching a height and width of approximately 50 to 60 cm, 'Ocean Pearl' is ideal for garden beds, low hedges, or as a specimen plant. Its compact form and captivating scent make it a standout addition to any garden.

In Perth's climate, 'Ocean Pearl' thrives in full sun to part shade, with some protection from the harsh afternoon sun during summer. Plant it in well-drained, acidic soil; incorporating an acidic mix or using a gardenia-specific potting mix is beneficial. Regular watering during warmer months is essential to maintain soil moisture, but ensure the soil is not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Feeding with a balanced, acidic fertiliser fortnightly during the growing season will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Prune lightly after the main flowering period to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Protect the plant from frost during cooler months.
