Description
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Apple Blossom' is an evergreen shrub celebrated for its abundant pale pink, five-petalled flowers with a striking deep red throat. The glossy, dark green foliage provides a lush contrast to the blooms, which can measure up to 16 cm across. While it predominately flowers from Kambarang to Bunuru (Late Spring to Late Summer), it can also produce blooms sporadically throughout the year.
This hibiscus thrives in Perth's climate, performing best in garden beds, as informal hedges, or screening plants. It prefers full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering, especially during warmer months, keeps it healthy, and a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in Djilba (Early Spring) and Birak (Early Summer) supports vigorous growth and flowering. Light pruning after the main flowering season encourages a bushy habit, while mulching helps retain soil moisture. Be vigilant for pests like aphids and hibiscus beetles, treating them promptly to maintain the plant’s health.
