Description

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Firebird' is an evergreen shrub renowned for its vibrant tangerine-orange, ruffled petals that fan out in a windmill style. This cultivar reaches a height and width of 1–2 metres, making it suitable for garden beds and large pots. Its glossy, dark green foliage provides a lush backdrop to the striking blooms, which appear from late spring through to autumn (Kambarang to Djeran).

In Perth's climate, 'Firebird' thrives in full sun and well-draining, light soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during the hotter months, to maintain soil moisture without waterlogging. Applying a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring (Djilba) will promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering. Pruning after the main flowering period helps maintain shape and encourages new growth. Mulching around the base can conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. While 'Firebird' is not frost-hardy, Perth's mild winters are generally suitable for its cultivation.
